Upon arrival at Yangon International Airport, you will be met and greeted by your private English-speaking driver-guide with a welcome sign. Transfer to your hotel and enjoy some leisure time to freshen up and settle in.

Afternoon / Evening

• Stroll along the vibrant streets of downtown Yangon — a fascinating blend of British colonial architecture and Burmese culture
• Visit Sule Pagoda, a 2,000-year-old pagoda standing in the very heart of the city, used historically as a navigation point during the city's colonial layout
• Explore Chinatown and Mahabandoola Garden for an introduction to local street life
• Evening visit to the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda — Myanmar's most sacred Buddhist site. Plated with 27 metric tonnes of gold and studded with thousands of diamonds and rubies, it is utterly dazzling at night. Allow 1.5–2 hours to absorb the atmosphere

Sacred Rock and Ancient Capital

After breakfast, depart Yangon heading east on the Yangon–Mandalay Expressway. Stop in the ancient city of Bago (formerly Pegu), once the splendid capital of the Mon Kingdom, for a morning of sightseeing.

Bago Sightseeing (approx. 2–2.5 hrs)

• Shwethalyaung Buddha — a colossal 55-metre reclining Buddha built in 994 AD, considered the most lifelike reclining Buddha in the world
• Shwemawdaw Pagoda — taller than the Shwedagon at 114 metres, this towering golden stupa is Bago's most important pagoda
• Kyaik Pun Pagoda — four enormous 30-metre seated Buddhas placed back-to-back, a breathtaking sight
• Snake Monastery (Hmawbi Kyaung) — a unique monastery home to a giant python revered as a reincarnated abbot

Afternoon — Drive to Kinpun Base Camp

Continue driving southeast to Kinpun, the base camp village for the ascent to Golden Rock. Upon arrival, board the local truck for the exciting 45-minute mountain ride up to the ridge (truck fare not included in tour cost). Short 10-minute walk to the pagoda.

Golden Rock Pagoda (Kyaiktiyo)

• Marvel at the legendary Kyaiktiyo Pagoda — a small golden pagoda sitting atop a gravity-defying golden boulder balanced precariously on the edge of a cliff at 1,100 metres elevation
• According to legend, the rock is held in place by a single strand of the Buddha's hair enshrined within the pagoda
• The site is especially magical at dusk and dawn — if time permits, stay to see the pagoda lit up under the stars

From Sacred Heights to Royal Mandalay

Rise early for a serene sunrise viewing of the Golden Rock — arguably the most beautiful time to visit as the golden boulder glows in the morning light with pilgrims already in prayer. Descend by truck after breakfast and begin the long, scenic drive north to Mandalay.

The drive takes you through the heartland of Myanmar — rolling hills, paddy fields, teak plantations and small roadside towns. Stop for a comfort break and local snacks along the way.

Arrival in Mandalay — Evening

• Mandalay Hill sunset viewpoint — climb or drive to the hilltop for a panoramic view across the city, the Irrawaddy River and the distant mountains
• Zegyo Market — the largest market in Upper Myanmar, a sensory feast of local goods, gemstones, lacquerware and fresh produce

Royal Cities and Teak Wonders

A full day exploring Mandalay and its neighbouring ancient royal capitals, collectively known as the 'Four Royal Cities'. Your private car makes it easy to cover all the highlights at your own pace.

Morning — Mandalay City

• Mandalay Palace — the last royal palace of the Burmese kings, rebuilt after WWII destruction. Climb the watchtower for sweeping views of the entire palace complex and moat
• Kuthodaw Pagoda — known as the 'World's Largest Book': 729 white marble slabs each engraved with a page of the Tipitaka Buddhist scriptures, housed in miniature temples
• Shwenandaw Monastery — the last surviving building from the original 19th-century Royal Palace, exquisitely carved in gilded teak
• Mahamuni Pagoda — home to the sacred Mahamuni Buddha image, one of Myanmar's most revered. Pilgrims come daily to apply gold leaf to the image, which has grown to extraordinary thickness over centuries

Afternoon — Amarapura (15 mins from Mandalay)

• U Bein Bridge — a 200-year-old, 1.2 km teak bridge across Taungthaman Lake, the longest teak bridge in the world. Walk across and watch local fishermen, monks and villagers go about their daily routines — extraordinary at golden hour
• Mahagandayon Monastery — one of Myanmar's largest Buddhist monasteries, home to over 1,000 monks. Witness the monks' famous alms procession (best before 10 am)

Late Afternoon — Mandalay Crafts Quarter

• Explore the city's famous craft workshops: gold-leaf beating, silk weaving on traditional hand looms, marble Buddha carving and bronze casting — all within a short walking distance of each other

The Plain of Temples

After breakfast, depart Mandalay heading southwest along the scenic Irrawaddy River valley to Bagan — one of the world's greatest archaeological sites and Myanmar's crown jewel.

En Route Stops

• Inwa (Ava) — former capital of the Burmese kingdom for over 400 years. Cross by boat and explore the atmospheric ruins, ancient monastery and the famous leaning Nanmyin Watch Tower by horse cart
• Sagaing Hill — a beautiful ridge covered in more than 500 white-and-gold pagodas and 90 monasteries, home to thousands of monks. The view across the Irrawaddy River is one of Myanmar's finest

Arrival in Bagan

Arrive in Bagan by early afternoon. Check into your hotel and take a first orientation drive through the temple plain in the late afternoon. Watching the sunset over 2,000 temples from an elevated viewpoint — Shwesandaw Pagoda or a permitted climb — is an unforgettable introduction.

Dawn Over 2,000 Temples

Begin the morning with a magical hot air balloon flight over the Bagan plain at dawn — the most spectacular way to witness 2,000 temples emerging from the morning mist. Balloons typically fly for 45–60 minutes. Not available April–September.

Morning — Major Temples

• Ananda Temple — the finest, largest and best-preserved temple in Bagan, built in 1105 AD. A masterpiece of Mon architecture with four 9.5-metre standing Buddhas facing the cardinal directions
• Thatbyinnyu Temple — Bagan's tallest temple at 61 metres, offering a feeling of immense scale and age
• Dhammayangyi Temple — the widest temple in Bagan, built by King Narathu in the 12th century. Famous for its extraordinary brickwork — said to be so tight not even a needle could fit between the bricks
• Sulamani Temple — the 'Crowning Jewel', dating to 1183 AD, adorned with exceptional stucco carvings and original murals

Afternoon — Hidden Gems & Local Life

• Minnanthu Village Temples — venture off the beaten track to lesser-visited temples in Minnanthu village area, where you can wander alone among ancient ruins and local villagers
• Shwezigon Pagoda — the prototype for all Burmese bell-shaped stupas, built to enshrine bones of the Buddha
• Nyaung U Market — a lively local market perfect for picking up lacquerware, puppets, thanka paintings and other Bagan specialties
• Sunset viewpoint — end the day watching the sun sink behind the temples, turning the plain into a canvas of gold and crimson

Caves, Mountains and the Lake

Depart Bagan after breakfast, climbing into the Shan Hills towards one of Myanmar's most remarkable cave temples, before descending to the tranquil shores of Inle Lake.

Pindaya Caves (midday stop, approx. 1.5 hrs)

• Shwe Oo Min Natural Cave Pagoda — a vast labyrinthine cave system above Pindaya town, containing over 8,000 gold-lacquered Buddha images accumulated over 2,000 years
• The caves are entered via a covered walkway and escalator (or steps) leading up through the limestone cliff face — a dramatic and memorable arrival
• The view down over Pone Taloke Lake and the Shan hills from the cave entrance is superb
• Pindaya town itself is charming — browse local Shan crafts, umbrella-making workshops and tea shops

Afternoon — Drive to Inle Lake

Continue the scenic mountain drive through terraced hillsides, pine forests and Danu/Pa-O minority villages to Nyaung Shwe, the gateway town to Inle Lake. A motorboat transfer takes you across the lake to your hotel.

Floating Gardens and Ancient Stupas

A full day exploring the magical world of Inle Lake by private motorboat — one of the most serene and visually stunning days of the entire journey.

Morning — Inle Lake Highlights

• Intha leg-rowing fishermen — the Intha people use a unique one-legged rowing technique, balancing on the stern of their canoes. Early morning is the best time to catch them at work against the backdrop of mist-shrouded mountains
• Floating gardens — the Intha have created extraordinary floating vegetable and flower gardens anchored to the lake bed with long poles. These islands of produce are a feat of ingenious agricultural engineering
• Jumping Cat Monastery (Nga Phe Chaung) — a 200-year-old monastery built entirely on stilts, famous for its collection of antique Buddha images in distinctive regional styles
• Silver and silk workshops — visit weaver villages where women create intricate lotus-fibre and silk textiles on traditional looms, a craft unique to Inle Lake

Afternoon — Indein

• Boat journey to Indein village — travel through channels lined with water hyacinths into the narrower canals leading to Indein, a remote Pa-O village
• Shwe Inn Dain Pagoda complex — a stunning field of hundreds of ancient stupas dating from the 11th–18th centuries, many in various states of romantic ruin, overgrown with trees. A covered walkway of vendors selling local crafts leads up the hillside to the main complex
• The site feels genuinely remote and is one of the most atmospheric in all of Myanmar — budget at least 1 hour here

Return to Nyaung Shwe

• Stop at a local winery on the lakeside — Myanmar Vineyard, situated on the hillside above the lake, produces surprisingly good red and rosé wines from local grapes. Sunset views over the lake from the winery are excellent

Overnight: Inle Lake

A Grand Journey Through the Shan Hills to the Golden City

🚗 Driving: ~9–10 hrs  |  📍 Distance: ~620 km

Enjoy a peaceful early morning on Inle Lake before departure — perhaps a quiet sunrise stroll along the Nyaung Shwe canal, a cup of Shan tea at a lakeside café, or a browse through the local morning market. After breakfast and hotel checkout, your private car awaits for the long, memorable drive back to Yangon.

Morning Departure — Nyaung Shwe to Taunggyi

Depart Nyaung Shwe heading south by road, climbing through the lush green Shan Hill landscapes. The road winds through terraced hillsides, pine forests, and Pa-O and Danu minority villages — the scenery is some of the most beautiful in Myanmar.

• Pass through Taunggyi, the busy capital of Shan State — a great opportunity for a morning tea stop and a stretch. Browse the vibrant Taunggyi market if time permits
• The Shan Plateau offers sweeping panoramic views at over 1,400 metres elevation — a completely different landscape to Bagan and Mandalay

Midday — Descending to the Plains

After Taunggyi, the road descends from the cool highland air of the Shan Hills down to the hot central plains of Myanmar. The change in landscape, temperature and atmosphere is dramatic and fascinating.

• Stop for lunch at a local roadside restaurant in Thazi or Meiktila — these are classic Burmese truckers' towns with excellent and authentic local food at very low prices (own account)
• Meiktila Lake — if passing through Meiktila, a brief stop at this large central lake makes for a pleasant break and photo opportunity

Afternoon — Through the Heartland

Continue south on the Yangon–Mandalay Expressway through the broad agricultural plains of central Myanmar — endless green paddy fields, golden pagoda spires on every horizon, and the timeless rhythm of rural Burmese life.

• Pass through Toungoo — an important historical city with its own royal past. If time and energy allow, a brief stop at Shwesandaw Pagoda in Toungoo is worthwhile
• The final stretch south passes through increasingly lush lowland scenery as you approach the Bago Division

Evening Arrival in Yangon

Arrive in Yangon by early evening (approximately 6:00–7:00 pm depending on road conditions and stops). Despite the long drive, this journey through the heart of Myanmar is richly rewarding — offering a rare ground-level perspective on the country's landscapes, towns and daily life that a 1-hour flight simply cannot provide.

• Check into your hotel and freshen up after the journey
• Final evening stroll on Bogyoke Aung San Road or along the Yangon Strand — the city feels lively and familiar after nine days away
• Farewell dinner (own account) — treat yourself to a special final meal. Recommended: rooftop restaurant in the colonial quarter, Shan cuisine at a local favourite, or the classic mohinga — Myanmar's beloved national dish
• Optional late evening visit to Shwedagon Pagoda, which is stunningly illuminated at night, for a final farewell to the Golden Land
